We very fortunate to inherit several flower beds from the Fairs (who owned the property for 50 years before us). Mrs. Fair had planted several varieties of ornate, colourful lilies in shades of orange, yellow, red and pink along the east and west sides of the house. These continue to come up in the first half of the summer and put on a dramatic show. Another gift are the beds of Peonies that bloom around the same time. Continuing the tradition, Ray has spent hours on the beds to the east side of the house planting and maintaining a large variety of flowers that bloom at various stages throughout the summer. These include Zinnea, Gladioli, Blue Cornflower, Echinacea, Daisy, Gaillardia, Black Eyed Susan, and Snapdragon to name a few.
One of the pleasures of the garden is to stand quietly and watch the bumblebees fly around and gently land on the colourful Zinnias. Another is having a ready supply of fresh cut flowers for vases in the summer. You just have to be judicious about it and take enough, but not too many!
